Balanced Literacy:
We have to use the Gradual Release Model: I/We/You
- It includes teaching phonics, grammar skills, reading and comprehension strategies, and writing forms and skills.
- Direct and indirect reading instruction, shared reading, and independent reading experiences must be provided.
The 8 components:
• Interactive Read Aloud (I do you watch)
• Shared Reading (I do you help)
• Guided Reading (You do I help)
• Independent Reading (You do I watch)
Writing and Support in the Classroom:
• Modeled or Interactive Writing (I do you watch)
• Shared Writing/Share pen (I do you help)
• Guided Writing/Writing Workshop (You do I help)
• Independent Writing (You do I watch)
Informational Texts: First, they are good for students that can read informational texts to find out things that they can use in their lives outside of the classroom. Second, it is possible to find informational texts dealing with topics that English language learners have a lot of background knowledge about and that do not demand background knowledge specific to the U.S culture or to English. Conversely, in stories written for U.S children, there is often a good deal of cultural knowledge assumed that some English language learners may not have. Third, informational text can expand opportunities for home-school connections.
